2016 was the year of artificial intelligence. Progress in self-management systems, voice recognition and in-depth training allowed computers to make a series of major breakthroughs that were previously impossible. Here are the six most significant of them.
1. AlphaGo defeated the world champion in the game of Go
Go is considered the most difficult professional game invented by mankind. It offers an incredible number of possible actions, and in many ways, as the players themselves claim, rely on human intuition. Artificial Intelligence AlphaGo trained itself by playing millions of games with its own copies, and in March this year managed to beat the champion Lee Sedol in four games out of five.
2. Tesla self-administered car brought a person with a heart attack to the hospital
Unmanned aircraft are the subject of heated debate around the world. However, the head of Tesla Elon Mask emphasizes that cars with an autopilot system are safer than cars without it, regardless of the point of view of the public. A report from the US National Security Council indicates that in 2015, the road death rate was 1.3 for every 100 million miles traveled by conventional cars, while the Tesla figures were 130 million miles passed and just one recorded accident. At the same time on the account of the company’s autopilot, at least one saved life – the car delivered its owner Joshua Nelly to the hospital, when on the way he had a sudden heart attack.
3. Roaming intelligence predicted the results of the Kentucky Derby
In May, the artificial intelligence UNU was able to successfully predict the four winners of the prestigious equestrian competition, and, strictly in the order of their finish. This was not done by any official expert on these competitions – thus, the computer won with a bet of 540 to 1. The UNU was developed by Unanimous AI, led by a human-machine interaction specialist Luis Rosenberg.
4. Microsoft AI today understands human speech better than the people themselves
In October of this year, Microsoft demonstrated that AI was the first time equal to the person in the effectiveness of automatic speech recognition. To achieve this result, the company’s system used the so-called ultra-accurate and recurrent neural networks. To prepare for the test, it took 2000 hours of recorded data.
5. AI predicted the results of the presidential elections in the US
The results of the elections in America were a surprise for many, including insiders of the political system. However, the Indian startup MogIA in Mumbai confidently predicted Trump’s victory. AI company analyzed 20 million records in social media and was able to determine the real likings of voters. And although many experts are wary of giving Mogia’s victory too much importance, objectively – this intellect was able to accurately predict the event, which was a surprise for billions of people.
6. Artificial intelligence revolutionized the diagnosis of cancer
Health care is one of the areas in which AI’s successes are of the greatest practical importance. In particular, IBM Watson supercomputer already today is able to notice deviations in human health, which escapes the attention of experienced diagnosticians. Statistically, in about 30% of cases, Watson puts patients an additional diagnosis, missed by human doctors.
Even more impressive results were achieved by the AI of the Houston Methodist Research Institute in Texas. Artificial intelligence examines millions of mammograms (its analysis speed is 30 times higher than human) and gives an oncological conclusion with an accuracy of 99%.
