The vast majority of gaming laptops are designed for transportation only in the most extreme case, because their size and weight does not allow to carry such a relatively mobile computer in a backpack every day. ASUS G501JW is not one of them, because the thickness of its body is less than 21 mm, and the mass hardly exceeds 2 kg. At the same time, the diagonal of the display is quite standard – 15.6 inches, that is, the user does not have to peer at the screen, straining his optic nerves. The manufacturer says that the whole thing is in the new, highly efficient cooling system, which is equipped with ASUS G501JW. We decided to find out how this system differs from the others, whether the laptop is stable with it and what its overall performance is.

The ASUS G501JW is available in several versions – with a different amount of disk storage, RAM and memory of the video adapter, as well as displays of various types and resolutions. A model with the index CN039H, whose specification is indicated in the table above, came to our test lab
The laptop is built on the Intel Haswell platform with a quad-core Intel Core i7-4720HQ, which was released in January this year. This is a high-performance mobile processor, manufactured on a 22-nm process technology. The base clock speed of each core is 2.6 GHz, but, thanks to Turbo Boost technology, it can be increased to a maximum value of 3.6 GHz (with one active core). The volume of the cache memory of the third level is 6 MB. The heatpacket TDP value for this processor is quite high – 47 W, so its stable operation requires a fairly efficient active cooling system. With a different processor, this notebook is not available.
The Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor has a dual-channel DDR3L-1333/1600 memory controller. In the notebook itself, there is only one DIMM slot, in which the ASUS G501JW-CN039H is equipped with the DDR3-1600 SK Hynix HMT41GS6BFR8A-PB module with a capacity of 8 GB. Another 4 GB of RAM DDR3-1600 is uninstalled on the motherboard. Of course, you can not replace them, but to expand the total capacity from 12 to 20 GB, replacing the main module with a 16 GB option is possible.
The Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor integrates the Intel HD Graphics 4600 graphics, operating at a clock speed of up to 1200 MHz (the base value is 400 MHz). The second, discrete video adapter, which is equipped with a laptop ASUS G501JW, belongs to the line of gaming mobile video cards of the middle level. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M model, which is installed in our novelty, appeared on the market in February this year. It replaced the model NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M, from which it is distinguished by a higher processor frequency (from 1097 MHz in the base version to 1176 MHz in Boost mode). The video adapter is built on the Maxwell architecture with a GM107 core, manufactured using a 28-nm process technology. The amount of GDDR5 memory available on board is 2 GB.
Due to NVIDIA Optimus technology, the laptop can switch from a discrete video adapter to work with an integrated core in an automatic mode, when high performance is not required, and thus save power when running autonomously. To display the image on board ASUS G501JW there are HDMI and Mini DisplayPort ports. The latter is combined with the Intel Thunderbolt interface, designed for high-speed data transfer. As for the display, according to the official specification, the novelty is offered to the user with one of two IPS-arrays with a diagonal of 15.6 inches each, having a different resolution: UHD 3840 × 2160 pixels or FHD 1920 × 1080 pixels.
The disk subsystem of the ASUS G501JW notebook in the modification CN039H is represented by two removable media. The first is a solid-state drive of form factor M.2 SD7SN3Q-128G-1002 with the capacity of 128 GB (available 119 GB) produced by the company SanDisk Corporation . On this disk there is only one working partition on which the operating system is installed. The second carrier is a 2.5-inch hard drive HGST Travelstar Z5K1000 model HTS541010A7E630 with a capacity of 1 TB (931 GB available), operating at a spindle speed of 5400 rpm. Both media have a SATA 6 Gb / s interface.
The laptop is equipped with a reader for flash cards format SD / SDXC. To connect external storage media, in addition to the previously mentioned interface Intel Thunderbolt, on board ASUS G501JW there are three USB 3.0 ports. The audio system is represented by the widely distributed Realtek ALC668 module, which works with HD Audio. To connect headphones and a microphone using a single combined 3.5 mm mini jack, but for outputting sound directly from the laptop on its board are placed stereo speakers.
Despite the rather large dimensions of the laptop, there is no built-in Ethernet wired module. To implement this interface (10/100 Base T), there is a corresponding adapter that connects to the USB port. In addition, ASUS G501JW has a dual-band wireless module Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260, which includes a controller Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac operating in the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz, as well as a Bluetooth 4.0 controller.
In standalone mode, the laptop runs on the built-in lithium-polymer battery. According to the official specification, the model ASUS G501JW can be equipped with batteries of different capacities – 96 W · h or 60 W · h, as in the case with the ASUS modification G501JW-CN039H. In our laptop the battery is a module with four cells, having a passport capacity of 60 Wh / h (3950 mAh, 15.2 V). The actual capacity at full charge was 55.5 Wh / h. The battery is charged from a rather large power adapter with an output power of 120 W (6.32 A, 19 V).
⇡ # External appearance
If it were not for the bright red insert that runs along the entire perimeter of the case, and the company logo ROG placed under the company’s logo on the laptop’s lid, it would be extremely difficult to determine if this model belongs to the game series. Unlike its competitors and fellow fighters against virtual evil spirits, ASUS G501JW looks strictly and elegantly – without unnecessary decor elements, LED garlands and pretentious external panels that evoke thoughts of racing cars and combat space vehicles. Nothing of the ASUS G501JW is there, but there is a style that takes care of each element of the design, which makes you pay attention to the novelty.
The case of ASUS G501JW is completely made of metal, painted in dark gray, almost black in color and having a noticeable roughness to the touch. The thickness of the body is almost the same everywhere, and it looks like a regular box with slightly smoothed edges. No narrowed or pointed edges, visually reducing the thickness of the case, the novelty does not – all the faces are even, without bevels. The laptop rests on four large rubber feet, placed on a completely flat lower metal surface. In addition to these, you can see the perforated rectangles behind which the stereo speakers are hidden.
Three LED indicators are installed on the front edge of the case, right in the center, informing the user about the power mode, charging the battery and the activity of the disk subsystem. The main interfaces are located on the sides. And all of them are shifted as far as possible from the user, so that the hanging wires do not interfere with the game process. On the right side is a memory card slot, two USB ports and a headset jack. The left side carries a third USB port, video outputs and a power supply connector.
⇡ # Input Devices
The cover of the laptop opens quite simply, but still with some effort put to it. Open better for the central part, because otherwise a large, 15.6-inch screen will start, though not much, but still bend. The design and interior finish of the ASUS G501JW are fully in line with its appearance. Under the display on a black background, a narrow bright red stretched out. The touch panel is highlighted with a red stripe. And finally, all the inscriptions on the keys are red in color, which makes the appearance of the novelty not boring.
The display of the laptop is attached to the main unit with a keyboard using a long loop. In the fully open state, the ASUS G501JW does not deviate too much – about 130 degrees, but this is more than enough to work at the table. In this case, the lower edge of the lid is lower than the plane of the body, but the device still remains on the four legs, and does not rest on the lid.
Almost all the space on the metal surface under the display is occupied by the input devices – a full-sized keyboard and a touch panel. The latter is 103 mm in length and 71 mm in width, including the main buttons, which have a single surface with the panel. The panel is approximately 23 mm offset to the left with respect to the central axis of the housing. The keyboard manufacturer especially stands out among the advantages of ASUS G501JW. First, the developers of the laptop have not spared her space, and therefore the novelty can boast not only a full-size main part, but also the presence of an additional digital block on the right. For a gaming laptop with a relatively small display diagonal and a compact body, the presence of a digital unit is an important point.
All the main keys have standard dimensions of 15 × 15 mm and are 3 mm apart, which is quite enough for games and for comfortable and fast typing. The stroke of the keys is 1.6 mm. The feeling of comfort at work adds also a clear tactile feedback of the keys. They do not have any combined functions, and for the layout of this keyboard it would be possible to put a solid one perfectly, if not for the location of the cursor block that literally squeezed between the main and digital blocks. For a gaming laptop, this arrangement of the cursor keys may not be the biggest, but still a disadvantage. But the keys of [W][A][S] and [D] familiar to any gamer in ASUS G501JW are highlighted in bright red color, so it will be difficult to confuse them with neighboring letters. The keyboard has an adjustable backlight in red. Adjustment is carried out by a combination of keys [Fn] + [F3] / [F4] and has three levels of brightness. It should also be noted that the laptop power management button is located in the upper right corner of the keyboard.
⇡ # Internal structure
To get to the innards of the ASUS G501JW, it is enough to unscrew all the screws located on the bottom panel of the case, then gently pry her with some sharp object and take it off. No additional hatches in the aluminum panel are provided. This way you can get to the hard drive and the SSD module with a single M.2 slot, a single removable memory module, a wireless module and a battery pack. The latter, like all of the above, if necessary, is simply enough to replace it yourself at home.
The motherboard with the cooling system occupies about half of the total housing area. The rest of the space is given under the battery and hard drive. Most likely, they caused the not very convenient placement of the cursor key block. But there’s nothing to be done – compactness, like beauty, requires sacrifice.
A special attention deserves the cooling system ASUS G501JW, because its manufacturer does not just highlight in the description, but makes a key feature of the novelty. However, talking about the revolutionary achievements in the installation of copper radiators with heat pipes and a pair of independently adjustable fans, probably not worth it. That’s really true, so this is that the cooling system inside the novelty takes almost a third of the free space. But this is the price for the compactness of the case and the power of the processor. Well, one more element of the cooling system is the case itself, which is made of metal from the ASUS G501JW, and therefore excels the heat outwardly.
