On its official website, the manufacturer indicates that a video game card is installed in the laptop, so we, like Acer representatives, refer the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro to the class of gaming laptops. Before the game models the company did not have – usually powerful notebooks Acer were considered multimedia models. In fact, the changes in positioning have occurred only formal – yes, the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro is suitable for games, but on a gaming laptop in the classic sense of this definition it is not very similar.
Recently, manufacturers of gaming laptops have several quite definite trends – the possibilities of software reassignment of keyboard buttons, recording of macros, multi-colored illumination of keys. And all this of our experimental did not touch – it has only the backlighting of the keys, but one-color. But he is able to do what the others do not know how to clean up their coolers from dust. The manufacturer called this technology Acer DustDefender.
The essence of Acer DustDefender is very simple. If the laptop is turned on, then once in three hours its fans begin to rotate for a short time in the opposite direction – this allows you to regularly clean the ventilation grilles from dust. This function looks very simple and unusually useful, but for some reason it was not found in any other gaming laptop that appeared in our test lab.
The official site of the manufacturer promises "a special coating with a nano-printing lithographic pattern." Maybe there is a "nano-print pattern" there, but, firstly, some kind of pattern – obviously not nano – is visible to the naked eye, and secondly, it is not entirely clear that the ultimate "nano-print pattern" gives to the end user.
But we find fault with the marketing formulations. The very plastic cover of the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro was very pleasant to the touch, and the pattern, consisting of vertical lines, looks strictly and pleasantly. Just fingerprints on it, despite the notorious nanolithographic pattern, will be assembled as well as on the lid of any other plastic notebook without oleophobic coating. As for the rest of the laptop's materials, the working area and the bottom are made of plastic – metal is not used in the notebook case. But Acer Aspire V17 Nitro turned out thin – its maximum thickness is only 28 mm, which is very good for the "seed."
The working area is made of plastic with a Soft-touch coating, on which the ill-fated prints are not at all worse than on the cover. Thanks to the large diagonal of the laptop, the palm rest has turned out to be spacious – it's convenient to work with a laptop.
The keyboard of the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro island type, with a soft and small key stroke. Like many "seeds", our experimental one has a separate digital block. However, there are no "gaming optimizations" of the keyboard: in particular, there is a Windows key in the lower left corner, which is often interfered with in games where the [Alt] button is enabled. Also, the keyboard of our experiment does not have the capabilities of software re-assigning keys and recording macros that many other gaming laptops have.
The backlight of the keyboard is red and unregulated, which is a bit strange. Virtually all modern gaming laptops, the color and intensity of the backlight can be changed in a wide range, and in conventional laptops (including gaming), you can even adjust its brightness. Alas, there is nothing like our experimental – with a red backlight, the brightness of which can not be changed, will have to accept. But it is not too bright – it does not cut eyes and does not interfere with the perception of the picture on the screen.
The touchpad of the laptop is large (117 × 78 mm), its only button is under the touch panel, but there will not be any problems with pressing due to good drivers. In general, this touchpad could be called convenient, if not for an unfortunate accident. During testing, even before the disassembly stage of the laptop, the touchpad spontaneously shut down and disappeared from the device manager. The combination of keys [Fn+F7]activating the touchpad, reinstalling the Acer software and even Windows did not give any effect – the touch panel did not work. This is a very sad drawback, although, judging by the feedback on the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro found on the Internet, only our test lab met this behavior of the touch panel.
All connectors are located on the left and right sides of the laptop. There are two USB 2.0 ports on the left and a BD-RE drive tray that can record BD-R and BD-RE formats. On the right is a pair of USB 3.0, HDMI, an Ethernet network port, a headset jack and a card reader.
There are two microphones on the front panel, and there is nothing on the back end except for the ventilation holes.
The bottom of the laptop is very simple – nothing interesting, except the holes of the cooling system and screws, it is not. It is made, like the rest of the laptop, made of plastic.

The laptop has an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz (up to 3.5 GHz in Turbo Boost mode), a L3 cache of 6 MB and a 47 W heat pump. This processor we often meet in gaming laptops and, judging from past tests, the processor performance of the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro should be at a good level.
RAM in the laptop is set to 12 GB. The memory was recruited by two modules DDR3L-1600, 8 and 4 GB.
In addition to the integrated processor video core, a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M graphics card with a GM107 chip based on the Maxwell architecture is installed in the notebook. This is not the slowest NVIDIA graphics card, but if you evaluate it from the point of view of mobile video cards, then you can take it as soon as possible to the initial level. On the other hand, MSI makes gaming laptops also with the 840M, so the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro can be considered to be in this category. On the card of the video card, 2 GB of video memory GDDR5 is uninstalled.
Instead of a bunch of SSD + HDD or one SSD, a Seagate ST1000LM014 hybrid disk with a capacity of 1 TB is installed in the laptop. On its motherboard, 8 GB of additional Flash memory such as MLC is disconnected – exactly the same amount of memory was found in other generations of Seagate hybrid drives. This memory should store data that is used most often in the system. This approach can speed up the loading of the OS and other programs, but not a tangible effect is achieved in all scenarios. The Atheros AR5BWB222 controller is responsible for wireless communication. Thanks to it, the laptop can connect to Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n networks with frequencies of 2.4 and 5 GHz, and connect to other devices via Bluetooth 4.0 protocol.
The maximum thickness of the notebook is 28 mm, which is not very much for a "seed". To achieve such harmony it was possible also due to the battery: firstly, it is immobile, and secondly, not too capacious – 51 Wh (4605 mAh, 11.3 V). The laptop is charged from a power supply unit of medium size with a power of 135 W (19 V, 7.1 A).
Gaming laptops are usually expensive. However, inside our experimental not the most powerful video game card is installed, so at the time of writing this article, we will have to pay about 67 500 rubles for the modification we have considered. By modern standards, this is almost cheap – most laptops with a similar configuration are significantly more expensive.
The dismantling of the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro is not easy, because it's not the bottom of the laptop, like most laptops, but its work area. First you need to unscrew all the screws located on the bottom, and remove the optical drive. Then it is necessary very carefully – in order not to damage the fragile plastic latches – remove the silver panel located under the screen and unscrew the remaining two screws that are under it. After that, you need to carefully remove the working area and also carefully disconnect the keyboard and touchpad loops. After completing all these actions, the user will have access to the inside of the laptop.
Next, if desired, in the laptop you can replace the hard drive, as well as remove the battery and the wireless module. The RAM is located on the back of the motherboard – the user does not have access to it. Of course, if you do not disassemble the laptop until the last screw.
Also quite interesting is the cooling system – the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro turbines turned out to be different. A small left-hand turbine is responsible for cooling the processor and works constantly. And the right, large turbine is switched on only during serious loads or when using discrete graphics.
