After the discovery of the Higgs boson and the discovery of several new particles last year, the semi-legendary setup came to the limit of its capabilities. Therefore, in 2016 it was modernized, increasing the capacity, and now the researchers report on a new large “catch”. He’s terrific – just five versions of one important elementary particle.
The charmed omega-baryon was insidious and elusive, it could not be measured at all, only to fix the trace of the former presence of the subatomic particle in some experiments. And here is unprecedented luck. A team of researchers discovered a whole scattering of omega-baryons and calculated that they are in five different energy states.
This pulls on the opening of the century and makes you look at quarks, their nature and behavior, from a completely new angle. Omega baryons, as well as protons and neutrons, belong to “large” particles, with the general name “hadrons”. Their structure is formed by a combination of quarks of different types, two or three particles per each hadron. For example, the same enchanted omega-baryon consists of one “charmed” quark and two “strange” quarks.
It is extremely difficult to study the quarks themselves, so the process proceeds through an analysis of the properties and structure of hadrons. In the light of the latest discoveries at the Large Hadron Collider, scientists came to the conclusion that hadrons from 5-6 quarks instead of the usual 2-3 are not uncommon, but simply a new layer of unexplored particles. Five versions of the enchanted omega-baryon to that evident confirmation and now not only it is possible, but also it is necessary to search with enthusiasm for new curious particles.
